Establishment of BKMEA Fire Safety Cell

In the arena of global RMG, Bangladesh has already achieved the prestigious second position and is now aspiring to claim the first position within the next few years and will be the hardest competitor with its immense potential in the coming global RMG battle by establishing its dominating approach towards the world RMG manufacturers as a global icon. Once dubbed a "bottomless basket," it's now a symbol of wonder and the "Made in Bangladesh" tag now signifies international recognition for the country, making it a prestigious brand across the globe.

At this juncture, Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) lies at the heart of this remarkable journey. This pivotal trade organization has played a transformative role in shaping the sustainable growth and development of the RMG industry. With a visionary approach, BKMEA champions the concerns of knitwear pioneers and policymakers, fostering fair practices, sustainability, and industry resilience. Its diplomacy fosters global connections, cross-border opportunities, and solutions to challenges.

Despite its economic success, the RMG industry faces a significant challenge, particularly regarding fire incidents. Fire is the biggest threat to life that most people face at work; it can lead to immense damage, serious injuries, and even death. An old saying warns, “fire is a good servant but a bad master”. It is often classified as an extreme event, characterized by relative rareness, huge impact, and statistical unexpectedness. However, it is critically important to minimize the risk of fire in the workplace and to make sure every employer and employee is aware of appropriate actions to be taken in the event of a fire.

Since workplace safety is the foundation of business success, BKMEA recognizes the growing need to raise awareness about fire safety and its devastating consequences for people, property, and businesses. Recognizing the urgency of fire safety, BKMEA established the Fire Safety Cell on August 1, 2009. Staffed by a team of expert fire safety professionals and equipped with the necessary technical support, the Fire Safety Cell has become a key pillar in ensuring workplace safety. Like watchful knights, they have been working tirelessly, acting as a vigilant guardian in helping the member factories to prevent fire-related accidents.

According to EPB data, in FY 2021-2022, garments constituted 84.58% of exports, up from 81.82% in FY 2020-2021. Knitwear and woven garments earned $25.73 billion and $21.25 billion respectively in 2023, growing at rates of 10.87% and 9.56%. Total export turnover, including related products, hit $49.24 billion, representing 88.35% of overall export earnings. On the other hand, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), GDP growth rebounded to 7.10% in FY 2021-2022 but was hampered by the Russia-Ukraine crisis, estimating 6.03% growth in FY 2022-2023.
Fires cripple factories, disrupt production, and damage Bangladesh's reputation.  More importantly, they steal lives. Equipping factories with functional fire alarms, sprinklers, and clear escape routes can protect workers, foster a stable industry, and build trust with international partners.  Regular fire drills and proper building maintenance are crucial.

Investing in fire safety isn't just ethical, it's economically sensible. Fewer accidents not only contribute to a more stable workforce but also prevent costly disruptions. Therefore, effective fire safety management is highly desirable to minimize safety-related workplace hazards. As a result, fire safety has become a prime concern not only to entrepreneurs but also to RMG buyers, the government, and its related bodies. By prioritizing fire safety, Bangladesh can protect its workers, its reputation, and its future.

The BKMEA Fire Safety Department plays a significant role in enhancing the long-term sustainability and viability of the RMG sector in Bangladesh. Through various initiatives, including fire safety training, publication of informative resources, and the development of effective fire safety policies, strategic emergency plans, conducting risk assessments, and promoting fire drills, the department ensures preparedness and efficient response to emergencies in member factories.
