Green Industry Development (GID)

For the Just Transition and Environmental Sustainability in Bangladesh’s RMG Industry that BKMEA has launched Green Industry Development Cell (GID Cell) for the first time in the corporate sector. A just transition ensures that workers and communities are not left behind during this transformative process. BKMEA has been always trying best to achieve SDG goal in 2030. Whereas Bangladesh government looks forward to greening its energy and manufacturing to sustain its economic growth and climate change.

Consultancy Services:

The primary function of the BKMEA GID Cell is to provide consulting and technical support services for member factories to obtain United States Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED certification. BKMEA GID CELL worked with international consultants to provide green consultancy for BKMEA member factories to reduce the carbon emission and economically viable.
The LEED rating system is recognized nationally and internationally as the green building design standard.

• Building energy simulation and audit
• Create energy simulation model to compare with the existing one

II. Climate Resilience

Necessary Advice for climate change & guidelines on Rainwater harvesting system and management for the RMG industries. Whereas, climate change is a health issue, a workplace issue, a social justice issue, and a human rights issue. Moreover, climate change is already having a serious impact on the safety and health of workers in all regions of the world. The ILO estimates that more than 2.4 billion workers (out of a global workforce of 3.4 billion) are likely to be exposed to excessive heat at some point during their work. Whereas 2.4 million workers are working in Bangladesh’s knitwear sector.

Others Activity

• BKMEA is being collaboration with Government and International partner such as World Bank, GIZ, ILO, SERDA, Ethical Trading Initiative etc. and provided various workshops on environmental issues are carried out throughout the year as well as participate also.
• BKMEA is closely working with the government to develop and implement various environmental policies.
• Necessary Advice is given on Rainwater harvesting system, Rainwater treatment plant & ETP set-up in the factories.
• Comply Necessary Advice & guideline on waste reduction, re-use, & recycle in the factories.
• Necessary Advice & guideline to ensure on energy reduction by using solar system & re-use in the factories.
• BKMEA in collaboration with GIZ and SREDA working on Sustainable and Renewable Energy as well as Energy Efficiency in Bangladesh.
• BKMEA always emphasize on Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan for environmentally sustainable business.

 

Previous Activity

• Feasibility Study on Developing Capacity Building Framework for Green Factory in the RMG Sector in Bangladesh.
• Conducted numerous of Owners session & Workshop in Dhaka, Narayanganj, and Chittagong for Awareness.
• Pre-assessment for green industry development among the interested members. More than 150 factories went through this pre-assessment process.
• More than Ten (10) member of factories of BKMEA have registered in USGBC & making it green industry for better working environment as well as sustainable productivity or eco-friendly products through BKMEA GID cell.
• BKMEA in collaboration with GIZ has already provided training on chemical to the personals of factory members.
• BKMEA in collaboration with SREDA has already been work on Bangladesh Green Building Guidelines.
• BKMEA is also considering gender-responsive policies in its transition toward low-emission energy systems.
• BKMEA had work on Cleaner Production in collaboration with PaCT Bangladesh.

Future Projection

The Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) has set ambitious goals under its Sustainability Vision 2030 which are reduction in carbon emissions, reduction in groundwater usage, adoption of ZDHC chemical guidelines, reduction in energy consumption, reliance on renewable energy and reduction in deforestation. On the other hand, country RMG sector has pledged to reduce 30% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

Publication

BKMEA has been distributing Flyers, Hand bill,LEED Canvas,poster to its member factories every year. various Study module on Environmental Sustainability has already been developed by BKMEA and many more yet to come for the RMG entrepreneurs. BKMEA believes awareness is key to success. The interest shown by the entrepreneurs for green Industry is truly worth appreciated and the demand of Green Factory is on the rise at the RMG sector.
